Substance held their second Meet Mat contest and I wanted to give it a shot. Since it's almost the Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year) I wanted to make my Meet MAT something related to that. My first idea is basing the head on a Chinese lantern.
I'm very rusty at Painter (more of a Designer kind of guy) so I thought I'd use this competition as an excuse to derust.
Here is a quick reference/moodboard of what I'm going for:

Update 01:

Something I'm not sure about is how to make the top and bottom rings with displacement. I always end up getting some really wacky results like this:

Update 02:

Never really sculpted before so adding wrinkles to the clothes was a bit of a challenge.
Gonna try to add some patterns onto it like this:

Update 03:

I would've liked to add more/better detailed patterns on the shirt but I don't have much time (I've got a uni project to worry about!) so I just stuck with a simple cloud pattern. I added some red pockets and coins on the base using displacement. I really gotta figure out/finalize the lantern head now.
Final Renders:

Overall I had a lot of fun with this project, I also learnt a bunch of new stuff and it definitely helped me derust and get back into painter. If I more time I'd definitely include more patterns on the shirt. I also wish the lantern head came out a bit better but for now I'm fairly satisfied with it.
